3 Montessori Thanksgiving Activities for Kids

Thanksgiving is a magical time to cozy up with family and work together to make a scrumptious meal. A Learning Tower, or Kitchen Helper Stool, is useful for cooking with a little one who can stand so that they can participate at your level. Here are two of our favorite kid-friendly Thanksgiving recipes and a few other ideas to help include your little one in preparations.

Thanksgiving Activities for Toddlers

1. Make Applesauce

A yummy and healthy Thanksgiving dessert for kids!

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
Yields: 4 1/2-cup servings

  • 3-4 large apples of your choosing: Macintosh, Pink Lady, Gala, etc.
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)

* = Little one friendly!

  1. Wash each apple with a damp towel.*
  2. Chop each apple into three sections horizontally, as pictured above.
  3. Cut each section of apple into chunks using an apple corer, as pictured above. OR place the apple on an apple peeler and corer, and hold it steady as your little one turns the handle.*
  4. Juice 1 lemon.*
  5. Toss the apple chunks into a pot with the water and lemon juice.*
  6. Heat the mixture over medium heat. When it begins to bubble, stir and let it cook for another few minutes.
  7. Stir again and cover the pot slightly with the lid. Turn the heat down to low and let the apples simmer and cook through, about 10 minutes.
  8. Remove the lid and let it simmer for another 5-10 minutes, mixing several times.
  9. If you like chunky sauce, your applesauce is ready!
  10. To make it smoother, use a spatula or potato masher to break up the remaining chunks.*

2. Bake Biscuits

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 12 minutes
Yields: 6-9 biscuits

Ingredients (Vegan if using non-dairy margarine and milk)

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 T baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 4 T margarine
  • ½ – ¾ cup milk (any variety: dairy, rice, soy, almond, coconut, etc.)

* = Little one friendly!

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Lightly oil a baking sheet.*
  3. Measure ingredients into separate bowls or measuring cups: flour, baking powder, salt, margarine, and milk.
  4. Place all the bowls onto a baking surface with a large mixing bowl.
  5. Mix the dry ingredients together, pouring them into the bowl and combining with a spatula.*
  6. Add the margarine and blend it into the dry mixture until it is mashed into small pieces and the mixture looks sand-like or grainy.*
  7. Add the milk, a little at a time, adding only as much as is needed for the batter to come together and not be sticky. Mix slowly until just combined into a ball.*
  8. Place dough ball on a lightly-floured surface and sprinkle it lightly with flour. Using the rolling pin from the Monti Kids baking set, roll the dough until it is about ½” thick.*
  9. Cut dough into desired shapes, and place the shapes onto a non-greased baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 7-12 minutes, depending on the size of your shapes, watching to prevent over-browning.

3. Make Thanksgiving Dinner a Family Affair

Incorporate your child into any part of the meal that they are ready to participate in.

  • Toddlers can tear bread for stuffing, mash up potatoes, peel and chop potatoes and carrots (with adult supervision or guidance), or mix batter for pies, cakes, and bread.
  • Your little one can help you set the table, and color (or write if they are old enough) place cards for each family member.
  • Practice grace and courtesy by thinking of one thing you are thankful for with your little one.
  • When everyone has enjoyed their meal, you can work together to clean the dishes using a stool or learning tower.
