How to Teach Young Children To Wash Hands Independently

In this short video, you’ll learn how to make hand-washing easier for your child.

  • For large bars of soap, cut them in half for more easy handling
  • Enable independence with a stool or learning tower
  • Build a couple of choices into your ritual “Would you like to hop or skip to the sink?”

Practical life skills are wonderful learning moments for children. Whether you are showing them how to place dishes on a shelf or taking laundry out of the dryer together, you are teaching them to take care of themselves and their surroundings.

Self-care tasks such as toileting, hand-washing, and dressing are empowering lessons for toddlers and preschoolers.  Rest assured that when you engage your child in these activities and give them increasing amounts of responsibility, they are learning something valuable.
