A Day in the Life: Zander and his mom apply Montessori at home

Marie and her family were new to Montessori when they received their first Monti Kids box. After she was introduced to Montessori, Marie says she couldn't get enough as she began applying Montessori into her son's day at their Bay Area home. Through Montessori, Marie says she has watched her 2.5-year-old son Zander  gain confidence and independence.

We hope this series continues to deliver inspiration on ways to incorporate Montessori at home.

Starting the Day

Zander usually wakes up at around 8 a.m. But before heading down to eat breakfast, he always takes a shower first to start his day. We’ve been very consistent about this. I think it’s important to teach him self care and he loves his shower time.

Breakfast Time

Zander’s favorite breakfast food is yogurt with blueberries and strawberries. Oftentimes, he’ll help assemble his own yogurt parfait - when he’s not getting distracted by hunger and eating the berries! Letting Zander help in the kitchen actually makes him more likely to eat his food! He’s so proud of what he’s accomplished. He began prepping his snacks when he was 1.5 years old.

Play Time

We’ve been into Monti Kids for a while now, and I couldn’t be more thankful! Zander has been learning a lot! He has been more patient when playing with his toys. I try to observe him and rotate new toys onto his shelf as needed. It’s really saved me time when it comes to picking up his toys! I wish we started introducing Monti Kids’ program earlier!

Nap Time

After a good lunch, nap is always a critical part of our day as it play is an important role in a child’s emotional and physical development. Zander usually takes his nap from 1 to 3 p.m. We just have to make sure he doesn’t go beyond the 3 p.m. time limit, because it can be a challenge to get him to bed. On this day Zander had just finished using some clay with his rolling pin from Monti Kids Level 7. He didn't want to let it go, and fell asleep holding it!

Watering Plants

Zander enjoys being involved in everything, including helping mommy water the plants. I think this is a great practical life activity for him because he’s learning to care for the environment.

On this day Zander is eating his daddy’s fried rice with carrots and peas. I love to offer him a lot of variety with vegetables in the mix, hoping he’ll have adventurous and healthy eating habits as he grows. As much as possible, we’re trying to teach him to be independent when eating his food. That way he can enjoy it more, plus it truly helps with his fine motor skills.

Laundry and Bed Time

After his night time bath, we always read some of his favorite books. He also loves to help with laundry. He will transfer clothes out of the dirty clothes bin and into the washer, and from the washer to the dryer. He also likes to sort his daddy's socks into two piles of the white ones and black ones. Then he's tired out from all of the activity and it’s time for bed by 8 p.m.!
